2024 Volleyball Adult Nationals Participants

USA Volleyball Champions
Boomers BB Team
Cap’n Morgan’s Women’s BB Team – Silver Medalists
Boomers McMahon 55 Team – Bronze Medalists

UVA (B Team)

For the third time, the UVA team made their way back to Columbus, Ohio. Despite the location not being a major draw this year, the UVA team put forth a solid effort in the Men’s B division, which saw a participation of 39 teams. The team faced some unexpected challenges, including playing alongside a Canadian AA team and merging with the 45s due to a lack of teams in that age group.

Team Roster:

  • Tom White (T White)
  • Sean Porta (Sticky)
  • Jeff Evans (the lefty)
  • Steve Hicks (clap, clap)
  • Tyler Matteson
  • Ryan Harris (still no nickname, 2nd year)
  • Robert Tucker (Tuck, setter)
  • Juan Max Biaz (Juanderful)

Despite a rocky start on Day 1, going 0-3, the team found their rhythm on Day 2 with victories against Red Stag and LHV Blue Horses 2. Unfortunately, they fell short against Southern Swing. Day 3 saw a close match in the Bronze B playoffs, but the team ultimately ended in 28th place. While not their best performance, the team’s primary goal of having fun was achieved.

BOOMERS (BB Team):

  • Roster: PaulB(1), DustinH(1), JensenH(1), JaredK(2), JoeM(3), JoshM(3), ColbyS(2), ChrisS(3), NickT(4), BrandonY(1), Michael Shorkey (25th Nationals)
  • Performance: Finished 5th out of 60 teams.

The BOOMERS BB team, featuring a mix of returning players and rookies, had a strong performance, ending up in the Gold Division. The team faced tough competition but managed to secure a respectable 5th place finish.

BOOMERS McMahon (55s Team):

  • Roster: Players from NJ, MD, PA, NY, VA, AZ, Canada
  • Performance: Bronze medal

This team, led by Michael Shorkey and Frank McMahon, exceeded expectations, defeating strong teams and securing a bronze medal. The team faced top-tier competition and showcased exceptional teamwork and resilience.

Cap’n Morgan’s (BB Team)

Roster:

  • Cassidy R, Erin F, Rachael A, Julie C, Jill D, Shalani S, Casey B, Zee O, Kaitlin Shorkey

Cap’n Morgan’s team had an impressive run, finishing 2nd out of 72 teams in the BB division. The team displayed outstanding skill and teamwork, making it to the finals and playing on center court with full commentary. Two players, Casey and Kaitlin, were named to the all-tournament team.

Schenectady 70

  • Roster: Paul Sander, John Ray, Jim Webber, Mike McNeil, Scott Grimm, Bob LaCerais, Paul Schillinger, John Walt, Dan Keiper, Uwe Rehder
  • Performance: Silver bracket first place

Despite early setbacks, the Schenectady 70 team rallied to win the Silver bracket, showcasing their determination and ability to adapt. The team’s off-court camaraderie was a highlight of the tournament.

Schenectady 65

  • Roster: Patrick Dwyer (Captain), Mike Aloi, Jeff Kryszak, Freeman Fessler, Scott Dewey, Bob LaCerais, John Markwart, Ron Sereika, Bob Grunow, Eric Shipley, Jack Anderton
  • Performance: 5th place overall

The Schenectady 65 team had a commendable performance, finishing 5th overall. The team faced tough matches but demonstrated consistent skill and teamwork, making it to the Gold Round.

Conclusion

The 2024 Volleyball Nationals in Columbus, OH, offered a mix of challenges and triumphs for our teams. Despite some setbacks, the overall experience was positive, and the spirit of camaraderie and competition remained high. The focus now shifts to Denver in 2025, where we aim to build on this year’s experiences and continue striving for excellence.
